Hydrostatic Weigh In
How it works. Based on the principle that muscle weighs more than fat in water you empty your lungs of air and are submerged under water while sitting on a scale. Sound like fun?
Pros: The less air in the lungs the more accurate the result.
Cons : How are you with dealing with fear of drowning? Need I say more?
Bod Pod
How it works: Fat is measured as a function of the air displacement of your body in an enclosed chamber - the pod. Kinda like hydrostatic weigh in, only without the water.
Pros: Fast. In about five minutes you've get an accurate picture of your body fat.
Cons: Some health clubs may offer this. But again you've got to find a pod.
Skinfold Test
How it works: This is the old stand by where a technician using calipers measures the folds of your skin in multiple spots on your body. The figures are plugged into a formula and out pops your body fat percentage.
Pros: Inexpensive.
Cons : Results can vary from good to not so good depending on the skill of the technician.
