Myth or Straight Scoop? Starches are Fattening
Myth: Starches are fattening and should be limited or avoided when trying to lose weight.
Fact: Bread, rice, pasta, cereals, beans may be high in starch but they are low in fat and calories. Besides they are an important source of energy for your body.
Complex carbohydrates like these only become a problem, ie high in fat and calories, when slathered with high fat toppings. You know like butter, sour cream or in a weaker moment cheese whiz?
So if youre trying to go from flab to fab you might want to trim the toppings?
That way, before you know it, youll be smart, sexy, and on your way to striking all at the same time!
Weight Loss Tip: The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends eating 6 to 11 servings a day from the bread, cereal, rice, and pasta group - even when trying to lose weight. Just pay attention to your serving sizesone serving is equal to 1 slice of bread, 1 ounce of ready-to-eat cereal, or ½ cup of pasta, rice, or cooked cereal. Try to choose whole grains, like whole wheat bread, brown rice, oatmeal, and bran cereal. Choose other starchy foods that are high in dietary fiber too, like beans, peas, and vegetables.
