Another Look at Yoga verses Pilates

Looking at the ying and yang of yoga verses Pilates, we agreed there were differences but many similarities too. Which shouldn't come as shock given that the creator of Pilates, Joseph H. Pilates, a German physical therapist, incorporated a lot of yoga into his conditioning method.


You could say Pilates exercise is a lot like yoga but without the spiritual element.

Then too both yoga and Pilates help you get more in touch with your body. People do both to get more fit, boost their energy levels, and gain an element of inner peace.

Neither Pilates nor Yoga is anywhere near an intense cardio workout. In fact the low impact nature of Pilates, makes if ideal for injury rehabilitation. Pilates exercises involve controlled and concentrated movement.

These can be surprisingly relaxing and revitalizing - regardless of your age or fitness level. Making it generally safe for everyone.

Yoga has many benefits such as calming breathing, reducing heart rate, and blood pressure, managing asthma, helping musculoskeletal conditions, lowering stress, and providing more flexibility.

In fact you could say yoga pilates for men are both about breath control. However with yoga breathing is more complicated than is the Pilates breathing.

Neither focuses on the limbs. They focus on the middle or the core. As with yoga, your body is used as the "weights". Using it to build strength and control muscle groups.

Yoga has a spiritual element. One objective of Yoga is unite the mind, the body, and the spirit. So those who do yoga want a more spiritual experience and want to work on the mental as well as the physical.

Outcomes from Yoga come about through the physical applications, breath control, and meditation.

Yoga verses Pilates doesn't really come down to which is better. In fact you know? maybe the best answer to the yoga verses Pilates issue is this. That is don't make it one.

Do them both.

Obvious no? Because the techniques compliment each other so well. Take the flexibility from Yoga and enhance it with Pilates. Tone and strengthen your abs with Pilates and don't be surprised if your Yoga poses get better too.
